Malinda McPherson
M.I.T.
About the speaker
Malinda J. McPherson studies auditory cognition. Her research focuses on how experience, such as cultural background or musical training, changes the way people hear complex sounds like speech and music. She is currently a PhD candidate in the Harvard-MIT Program in Speech and Hearing Bioscience and Technology. Malinda is a member of the Lab for Computational Audition at MIT, headed by Dr. Josh McDermott. 

Malinda received her undergraduate degree in cognitive science and music from Johns Hopkins University, and completed her MPhil at the University of Cambridge Centre for Music and Science, where she was a Churchill Scholar.​

David Lazer

About the speaker
David Lazer is a computational social scientist, and University Distinguished Professor of Political Science and Computer Sciences, Northeastern University, and Co-Director, NULab for Texts, Maps, and Networks. Prior to coming to Northeastern University, he was on the faculty at the Harvard Kennedy School (1998-2009). In 2019, he was elected a fellow to the National Academy of Public Administration. His research focuses on topics around misinformation, collective intelligence, and social networks; and has been published in such journals as Science, Nature,Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, the American Political Science Review, Organization Science, and the Administrative Science Quarterly, and has received extensive coverage in the media, including the New York Times, NPR, the Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal, and CBS Evening News.

Michael Bernstein

About the speaker
Michael Bernstein is an Associate Professor of Computer Science and STMicroelectronics Faculty Scholar at Stanford University, where he is a member of the Human-Computer Interaction group. His research focuses on the design of social computing and crowdsourcing systems. Michael has received eight best paper awards at premier computing venues, and he has been recognized with an NSF CAREER award and an Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship. His Ph.D. students have gone on both to industry (e.g., Adobe Research, Facebook Data Science, entrepreneurship) and faculty careers (e.g., Carnegie Mellon, UC Berkeley). Michael holds a bachelor's degree in Symbolic Systems from Stanford University, as well as a master's degree and a Ph.D. in Computer Science from MIT.

Duncan Watts

About the speaker
Duncan Watts is the twenty-third Penn Integrates Knowledge University Professor at the University of Pennsylvania. His research on social networks and collective dynamics has appeared in a wide range of journals, from Nature, Science, and Physical Review Letters to the American Journal of Sociology and Harvard Business Review.

About the speaker
Mark E. Whiting builds systems to study and scaffold improved collaboration. He is a postdoc under Duncan J. Watts in bothComputer & Information Science inEngineering and Applied Science and Operations, Information and Decisions at Wharton at U Penn. He was previously a postdoc under Michael S. Bernstein in the HCI group in Computer Science at Stanford. He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Industrial Design from RMIT and KAISTrespectively, and a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from CMU.
